The Joshua Effect: Celebrating Dedication and Determination Through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award is one of the most inspiring programs for young people, encouraging them to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and give back to their communities.

With levels ranging from Bronze to Silver and Gold, participants commit months of service, pushing boundaries to make a difference.

For over 11 years, many young volunteers have come through Gratitude’s doors, each with their own unique story.

One story, however, shines particularly bright—the story of Joshua Patel.

Joshua is a student at Avanti House School in Stanmore, and like many others, he took on the challenge of the DofE Award. What makes Joshua’s journey so remarkable is that he faces severe autism, a condition that presents daily challenges. Yet, Joshua was determined to give back and complete his DofE Bronze Award like all his peers.

Supported by an extraordinary family, Joshua has not only achieved his goals but surpassed them, showing what resilience, compassion, and teamwork can accomplish.

Joshua together with his supportive family are regular volunteers at the hub!

Joshua’s family became his backbone in this journey. Every Saturday, his parents, younger brother, and even extended family would come together to volunteer with him. It was more than a commitment to the DofE Award; it was a demonstration of the power of unity and love. Together, they found a place at Gratitude where Joshua could shine, and where his efforts would be met with open arms.

Joshua’s impact extended beyond just his own family. With a sense of leadership and initiative, he approached the headmaster and staff at his school, asking if they would support Gratitude as their chosen charity.

His efforts paid off, and he organised a school-wide grocery collection for the hub.

Donations from Avanti school spearheaded by Joshua filled the whole mini-bus!

Joshua’s charisma and determination inspired his peers, teachers, and the wider community, resulting in a donation beyond anyone’s expectations. The school bus, filled to the brim with groceries, was a testament to what one person’s passion can inspire.

This remarkable spirit led to Joshua being nominated—and ultimately winning—the Harrow Heroes Award in the Outstanding Young Person category on Wednesday 11th September 2024. His story, which we proudly call “The Joshua Effect,” is one of perseverance, heart, and the power of community.

Congratulations to Joshua and all the other nominees on this prestigious award!

Joshua didn’t stop with the Bronze Award; he is now working on his Silver Award, continuing his journey of service alongside his younger brother Jayden, who is starting his own DofE journey at the Bronze level.

Together, they plan to continue volunteering with Gratitude, bringing even more love and support to the community they care so deeply about.

Joshua’s mother recently wrote to us, sharing the joy that volunteering has brought to their family.

“Joshua is really enjoying his time at the Gratitude hub and is humbled to be in a position to help others. Would it be possible for Joshua to extend his voluntary period from 3 months to 6 months?” she asked. It’s no surprise that Joshua wants to continue giving.

His family has found a second home in our Gratitude community, and their dedication is a reminder of how the DofE Award is more than a personal achievement—it’s about creating a ripple of kindness that touches everyone around you.

Joshua’s story is just one of many that highlight the incredible power of young people when they are given the opportunity to serve. At Gratitude, we are honoured to have been part of his journey and to have witnessed firsthand the “Joshua Effect” in action. His determination and heart inspire us all, reminding us that no challenge is too great when faced with the love and support of family and community.

As Joshua embarks on the next chapter of his DofE journey, we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next. And for every young volunteer who, like Joshua, dedicates their time and energy to helping others, we are deeply grateful. You are all making the world a better place, one Saturday morning at a time.
